  • The United States government on Friday announced they have designated Marc Fogel as "wrongfully detained" in Russia. Fogel, a history teacher from Pennsylvania, is serving a 14-year prison sentence in Russia following his arrest at a Russian airport in August 2021.

The U.S. government has officially designated Marc Fogel, an American citizen, as wrongfully detained in Russia. Fogel, a former teacher at the Anglo-American School in Moscow, was arrested in August 2021 at Sheremetyevo Airport for possessing medical marijuana, which he uses to treat chronic pain from multiple surgeries. He was sentenced to 14 years in a Russian penal colony. The wrongful detention designation means that the U.S. State Department will now prioritize his case, involving a specialized team to work on securing his release. This development comes amidst strained U.S.-Russia relations, with Fogel's case adding to the list of Americans detained in Russia, including notable figures like Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan.
