Romania's ruling leftist Social Democrat Party (PSD) has withdrawn from government coalition talks, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Thursday, extending a political crisis triggered by the annulment of a presidential election this month.

The Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) has withdrawn from coalition government talks following a dispute over the allocation of key ministerial positions. The disagreement arose when the PSD, led by Marcel Ciolacu, demanded the ministries of energy and transport, which were not offered by the incumbent Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca's National Liberal Party (PNL). This breakdown in negotiations has led to uncertainty about the formation of a new government, with the PSD now considering opposition or alternative coalition options. The situation has been further complicated by the resignation of the current government, which was a technocratic administration led by Ciuca, who has been serving in a caretaker capacity since his resignation in June. The political instability comes at a critical time as Romania faces economic challenges and needs to finalize its budget for the upcoming year.
