Trump vows to pursue more defamation claims after ABC News settlement
- President-elect Donald Trump on Monday stepped up his legal threats against news outlets and said he would also consider suing social media influencers and others for defamation, two days after ABC News agreed to settle a lawsuit with him.
Donald Trump has vowed to pursue additional defamation claims following a settlement with ABC News, where he was awarded damages after accusing the network of defamation. This statement came after ABC News settled a lawsuit with Trump over comments made by anchor George Stephanopoulos, who incorrectly stated that Trump was found liable for rape in a civil case involving E. Jean Carroll. Although the jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, not rape, the misrepresentation by ABC News led to the settlement. Trump's legal team, led by attorney Alejandro Brito, indicated that this case is part of a broader strategy to challenge media outlets for what they perceive as false reporting. Trump himself expressed satisfaction with the settlement but emphasized his intent to continue legal actions against media entities to combat what he describes as "dishonest and corrupt" journalism.
