  • Government breached environmental rules over sewage overflows, watchdog finds - The Environment Department and regulators have two months to confirm they will take required steps to remedy the situation - or face court.

The UK government has been found in breach of environmental regulations concerning sewage overflows, according to a report by the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP). The investigation revealed that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Environment Agency failed to comply with laws designed to protect the environment from sewage discharges. The OEP highlighted that the government did not adequately enforce the monitoring and management of storm overflows, which are meant to prevent sewage from backing up into homes during heavy rain but often lead to untreated sewage being released into rivers and seas. This has resulted in significant environmental damage, with the OEP urging the government to take immediate action to address these failures and improve regulatory oversight.
