  • The federal government has pushed its target to achieve a net-zero electricity grid back 15 years to 2050 as part of new clean electricity regulations announced Tuesday
  • though officials maintain that target date was always the goal.

Canada has postponed its goal of achieving a net-zero electricity grid from 2035 to 2050, following significant pushback from Alberta, which has vowed to launch a legal challenge against the original target. This adjustment comes after Alberta's Premier Danielle Smith argued that the 2035 deadline was unrealistic and could lead to power blackouts and increased costs for consumers. The federal government, led by Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, has now set a new regulation allowing natural gas plants built before 2025 to operate until 2035 without carbon capture technology, and those built after 2025 must be net-zero by 2035. This compromise aims to balance environmental goals with economic and energy security concerns, although it has sparked debate over the feasibility and implications of the new timeline.
