PM Modi stated that then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi sacrificed the spirit of the Constitution to side with extremists.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress party for overturning the Supreme Court's Shah Bano verdict in 1985, accusing them of engaging in vote bank politics. Modi highlighted that the Congress government, led by Rajiv Gandhi, passed a law to negate the court's decision which had granted maintenance to Shah Bano, a Muslim woman who had sought alimony after being divorced. Modi claimed this action by Congress was a betrayal of women's rights and an example of their appeasement politics, which he said continued to affect the country negatively. He made these remarks during a speech in Madhya Pradesh, emphasizing that such decisions have long-term detrimental effects on society and governance.
