Government gives update on free bus pass for pensioners amid axing fears
- Transport Minister Simon Lightwood has responded to concerns the pass for people of State Pension age and those with disabilities will be scrapped in a money-saving move
The UK government has reassured pensioners that their free bus passes will not be affected by the upcoming changes to the bus fare cap scheme. Despite concerns raised by Labour MP Seema Malhotra about potential cuts to local transport funding, the Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed that the £2 bus fare cap, extended until the end of 2024, will not impact the existing free travel benefits for older and disabled individuals. The DfT also highlighted that local authorities have the autonomy to decide on the operation of these schemes, ensuring that the free bus pass remains a secure benefit for eligible recipients.
