Macron has a new prime minister but the same old problems

French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Gabriel Attal as the new Prime Minister on January 9, 2024, following the resignation of Elisabeth Borne. Despite the change in leadership, Macron faces persistent challenges including economic stagnation, social unrest, and political opposition. Attal, at 34, becomes France's youngest-ever prime minister and is tasked with revitalizing the government's image and addressing ongoing issues like pension reform backlash, immigration policies, and the rising influence of far-right parties. His appointment is seen as an attempt to inject new energy into Macron's administration, but experts suggest that without significant policy shifts, the underlying problems will remain.
