Three roads to be tolled, Government reveals toll rates

Three new roads in Auckland, Tauranga and Wellington will be tolled, Transport Minister Simeon Brown announced today. Among them is the $830m Penlink road north of Auckland, as has long been speculated.

The New Zealand Government has announced plans to introduce tolls on three key roads to manage traffic congestion and fund infrastructure improvements. The roads identified for tolling are the Northern Gateway Toll Road, the Tauranga Eastern Link, and the Takitimu Drive in Tauranga. The proposed toll rates are set at $2.50 for cars and light vehicles, $5.00 for heavy vehicles like trucks, and $1.25 for motorbikes. These tolls aim to encourage alternative transport modes, reduce travel times, and provide revenue for road maintenance and future transport projects. The initiative has sparked a debate on its impact on local residents and businesses, with concerns about fairness and potential economic effects. However, the government argues that the benefits of reduced congestion and improved road quality will outweigh the costs.
