North Carolina lawmakers have passed a constitutional amendment that mandates photo ID for voting, both in-person and by mail. This amendment, which was approved by the Republican-led General Assembly, will appear on the November ballot for voter approval. If passed, it would require voters to present a photo ID when casting their ballots, aiming to enhance election integrity. Critics argue that this measure could suppress voting among groups less likely to have photo IDs, such as the elderly, minorities, and low-income individuals. The amendment also includes provisions for free IDs to be provided by the state to ensure access to voting. This legislative move comes after previous voter ID laws in the state were struck down by courts for being discriminatory.
