  • Syria holds strategic importance for Moscow and Tehran, which have both bolstered Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime at critical moments.

The Syrian conflict holds significant strategic importance for both Russia and Iran due to several key factors. For Russia, Syria provides a foothold in the Middle East, allowing it to maintain a military presence through its naval base in Tartus and an airbase in Latakia, which are crucial for projecting power in the region and countering Western influence. Russia's intervention in 2015 helped turn the tide in favor of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, securing its interests and showcasing its military capabilities. Iran, on the other hand, sees Syria as a vital link in its "axis of resistance" against Israel and the U.S., providing a land corridor to Hezbollah in Lebanon, thus enhancing its regional influence and strategic depth. The conflict has also allowed Russia and Iran to deepen their military and economic cooperation, despite occasional tensions over influence in Syria.
