  • The Mexican Senate has approved a constitutional bill to eliminate watchdog agencies including the national transparency agency (INAI).

The Mexican Senate has approved a bill that seeks to eliminate several autonomous watchdog agencies, including the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), the National Institute for Transparency, Access to Information and Data Protection (INAI), and the Federal Economic Competition Commission (Cofece). This legislative move, which passed with 72 votes in favor and 50 against, aims to integrate these agencies into the government's structure, arguing that it will reduce bureaucracy and save costs. Critics, however, argue that this could undermine transparency, competition, and freedom of expression in Mexico. The bill now moves to the Chamber of Deputies for further discussion and approval. If passed, it would represent a significant shift in how these regulatory functions are managed, potentially affecting the independence and effectiveness of these bodies in overseeing government and corporate actions.
