  • Three American citizens imprisoned for years by China have been released and are returning to the United States, the White House said Wednesday, announcing a diplomatic agreement with Beijing in the final months of the Biden administration.

Three American citizens, Kai Li, David Lin, and Mark Swidan, who had been detained in China for several years, have been released, the White House announced. Kai Li, a businessman, was arrested in 2016 on charges of illegally exporting military technology. David Lin, also a businessman, was detained in 2006 for alleged involvement in a financial fraud case. Mark Swidan, a Texas-based businessman, was sentenced to death in 2019 for drug trafficking, despite his family's claims of his innocence. Their release was part of a broader diplomatic effort to improve U.S.-China relations, with President Joe Biden expressing gratitude to the Chinese government for their cooperation. The release was seen as a positive step amidst ongoing tensions between the two nations.
