  • On Wednesday, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey filed suit asking courts to prohibit County Executive Sam Page from naming Bell's replacement.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has filed a lawsuit against St. Louis County Executive Sam Page to prevent him from appointing the next county prosecutor following the resignation of Wesley Bell, who is running for Congress. Bailey argues that Page should not have the authority to appoint Bell's replacement because Bell resigned to run for another office, a situation not covered by the statute that allows the county executive to appoint a successor. Instead, Bailey contends that Governor Mike Parson should appoint the new prosecutor. The lawsuit seeks to clarify the legal process for filling the vacancy, asserting that Page's potential appointee would be an "interim placeholder" and that the appointment power should revert to the governor in such circumstances.
