Trump signs executive order directing federal funding cuts to PBS and NPR

President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order aiming to slash public subsidies to PBS and NPR as he alleged "bias" in the broadcasters' reporting. The order instructs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other federal agencies "to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS" and further requires that that they work to root out indirect sources of public financing for the organizations.
On May 2, 2025, former President Donald Trump, during his second term, signed an executive order aimed at cutting federal funding to public broadcasting entities PBS and NPR, citing their alleged liberal bias as the reason. The order directs the Office of Management and Budget to identify and eliminate funding for these organizations within the next fiscal year. This move has sparked significant controversy, with supporters arguing it aligns with conservative values and critics, including Democratic lawmakers and media advocacy groups, condemning it as an attack on free press and educational programming. The executive order also encourages private sector funding to replace the lost federal support, though the feasibility of this remains uncertain.
