Trump says he's ending federal funding for NPR and PBS. They say he can't

In an executive order, President Trump directs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to stop funding NPR and PBS, the nation's primary public broadcasters. The move could directly impact KCUR and Classical KC in Kansas City.
In a recent announcement, former President Donald Trump declared his intention to end federal funding for NPR and PBS if he were to return to office, citing his belief that these organizations exhibit a liberal bias. However, NPR and PBS have responded by asserting that Trump lacks the authority to unilaterally cut their funding, as it is determined by Congress. The organizations receive a small portion of their budgets from federal appropriations, with NPR getting less than 1% and PBS around 15%. Both entities argue that defunding them would negatively impact their ability to provide educational and public service content, particularly to underserved communities. Legal experts also weigh in, stating that any attempt to defund these public broadcasters would likely face significant legal challenges due to the established congressional control over such funding decisions.
