Senate averts government shutdown by passing federal funding ahead of midnight deadline

The U.S. Senate on Friday night averted a looming midnight shutdown of the federal government by passing a funding bill after approving a key procedural vote with the support of enough Democrats. The measure passed 54-46,
The U.S. Senate passed a $1.2 trillion spending bill on March 23, 2023, just hours before a midnight deadline, successfully averting a government shutdown. This bill, which had already been approved by the House, funds the government through September 30, 2023, covering about 70% of discretionary federal spending. It includes significant allocations for defense, homeland security, and other key areas, while also addressing issues like border security and cutting off aid to a UN agency accused of anti-Israel bias. The passage of the bill was marked by bipartisan support, although it faced opposition from some conservative Republicans who felt it did not go far enough in reducing spending or addressing border security. The legislation now awaits President Joe Biden's signature to become law.
