US Weekly Jobless Claims Fall; DOGE Action Boosts Planned Layoffs in February

On March 6, 2025, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that weekly jobless claims fell more than expected, dropping to 210,000 for the week ending March 1, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised level of 225,000. This figure was below the consensus estimate of 220,000, indicating a stronger labor market than anticipated. The four-week moving average also declined by 2,500 to 221,500, suggesting a consistent trend of decreasing unemployment claims. Continuing claims, which reflect the number of people receiving ongoing unemployment benefits, decreased by 22,000 to 1.8 million for the week ending February 23. This data points to a robust labor market, potentially influencing future Federal Reserve decisions on interest rates.
