The Iowa Department of Education has introduced a new initiative allowing schools to establish safety assessment teams aimed at preventing school shootings and other violent incidents. These teams, which can include school staff, law enforcement, and mental health professionals, are designed to identify and address potential threats before they escalate. The program, which is optional for schools, was developed in response to a new state law passed in 2021. The law also mandates that the Department of Education provide training and resources to help schools implement these teams effectively.
