JOHANNESBURG - Government plans to withdraw its ban on the sale of cannabis and hemp products. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced this on Tuesday after consultation with Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.
The South African government is set to lift the ban on cannabis and hemp products, as announced by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. This decision follows the 2018 Constitutional Court ruling that declared the private use and cultivation of cannabis by adults as constitutional. The new regulations will allow for the commercial production, processing, and sale of cannabis and hemp, aiming to regulate the industry, promote economic growth, and provide opportunities for small-scale farmers and entrepreneurs. The move is expected to create jobs, boost the economy, and position South Africa as a key player in the global cannabis market. The government plans to implement a regulatory framework that includes licensing, quality control, and compliance with international standards.
