  • The UK government has dismissed a NATO ally's suggestion that European countries should introduce conscription. Latvian President, Edgars Rinkevics, said his European neighbours should 'absolutely' follow his country's lead by increasing military funding and conscripting citizens into the armed forces.

The UK government has firmly rejected calls for conscription, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a professional, volunteer-based military force. This stance comes in response to discussions across Europe about potentially reintroducing conscription due to heightened security concerns, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has made it clear that the UK will not follow the path of countries like Latvia, which has reinstated conscription, or Sweden, which has plans to do so. Instead, the UK focuses on enhancing its military capabilities through voluntary service, with no plans to change this policy. This decision reflects the government's belief in the effectiveness and tradition of a volunteer military, despite the evolving security landscape in Europe.
