According to a report by The Intercept, on January 11, 2023, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) experienced a significant system failure, leading to a nationwide ground stop of all domestic flights. During this crisis, air traffic controllers turned to X (then Twitter) to share updates and coordinate responses. However, X Corp reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), claiming that the controllers' use of the platform for official communications violated X's terms of service. This action raised concerns about the potential risks to public safety and the reliability of communication channels during emergencies.
