Supreme Court won't lift lower court order unfreezing $2 billion in foreign aid

  • The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to halt a lower court order that required the Trump administration to unfreeze nearly $2 billion in foreign-aid funding, clearing the way for the money to flow to groups that have done work for the State Department and U.

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to lift a lower court order that unfroze approximately $2 billion in foreign aid intended for Afghanistan, which had been blocked by a group of families of victims of the September 11, 2001, attacks. These families sought to seize the funds from Afghanistan's central bank to satisfy a $7 billion judgment against the Taliban for their role in the attacks. The funds were initially frozen by the Biden administration following the Taliban's takeover of Kabul in August 2021. The Supreme Court's decision not to intervene means that the money can now be used for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan, as intended, despite ongoing legal battles over the rightful claim to these assets.
