  • Oakmont educator Marc Fogel, who was released from a Russian prison last month, and his mother Malphine have been invited by First Lady Melania Trump to attend President Donald Trump's speech to Congress tonight.

Marc Fogel, a retired American teacher from Pittsburgh, has been detained in Russia since August 2021 after being sentenced to 14 years in prison for possessing 17 grams of medical marijuana, which he used to treat his chronic pain. His case has drawn attention as he was not given a jury trial, and his family and supporters argue that the punishment is excessively harsh compared to similar cases. Recently, Fogel's situation was highlighted when he was mentioned by President Joe Biden during the State of the Union address, and his name was invoked by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler in a speech to Congress, urging for his release. Despite these efforts, Fogel remains imprisoned, with his family and legal team pushing for his designation as wrongfully detained by the U.S. State Department, which could potentially expedite his release.
