  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits help keep tens of millions of people across the country from going hungry. But Republicans across America have called for significant changes to be made to the SNAP program that could have a significant impact on what recipients can and cannot buy with their benefits.

States are increasingly targeting the use of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits to curb the purchase of junk food, aiming to promote healthier eating habits among recipients. This legislative push comes in response to concerns about the rising rates of obesity and diet-related diseases among low-income populations. Similarly, other states like Iowa, Illinois, and Mississippi are considering or have introduced measures to limit SNAP benefits to healthier food options. Critics argue that these restrictions could stigmatize SNAP users and complicate the program's administration, while supporters believe it could lead to better health outcomes and potentially reduce healthcare costs. However, these proposals face significant hurdles, including federal regulations and the need for waivers from the USDA, which oversees SNAP.
