  • Romania's pro-European coalition government survived a no-confidence vote in parliament on Friday, avoiding further political turbulence in the NATO and European Union member state which will rerun a presidential election this year.

The Romanian government, led by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, successfully survived a no-confidence vote on June 6, 2023, with the motion failing to garner the necessary 234 votes in the 466-seat Parliament. The opposition, primarily the right-wing AUR and the USR, along with some independent MPs, initiated the vote, criticizing the government's handling of the economy, education, and health sectors. Despite the opposition's efforts, only 169 MPs supported the motion, well below the required threshold. Prime Minister Ciolacu dismissed the vote as a political maneuver by the opposition, asserting that his government would continue to focus on economic stability and social welfare.
