  • A federal judge ruled that the head of a government oversight agency, whom President Donald Trump is attempting to dismiss, has the right to remain in office. The dispute will be further resolved by the Supreme Court,

A U.S. federal judge ruled that former President Donald Trump's dismissal of the head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO), Gene Dodaro, was illegal. The decision by Judge Randolph Moss of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia stated that Trump's action in 2020 to remove Dodaro, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, violated the law because the GAO head is supposed to serve a 15-year term to ensure independence from political influence. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by the Project on Government Oversight, arguing that the dismissal was an attempt to undermine the GAO's oversight capabilities. This decision reinforces the legal protections for the GAO's independence, ensuring that its role in providing non-partisan audits, evaluations, and investigations of government operations remains intact.
