The Welsh Government has announced its 2025-26 budget, which includes several key measures aimed at addressing financial challenges and public service demands. Despite a £1.3 billion shortfall, the budget focuses on protecting frontline services, with a significant emphasis on health and social care, receiving an additional £450 million. Education funding has been maintained, with an extra £100 million allocated to support schools and further education. Local government funding has been increased by 3.1% to help with social care and other services. However, there are cuts in other areas, including a £74.7 million reduction in rural affairs, a £15.7 million cut to the economy, and a £14.4 million reduction in social justice funding. The budget also introduces a new tax band for self-catering accommodation, aiming to raise £10 million, and there are plans to increase council tax on second homes. Additionally, the Welsh Government has decided to scrap the basic income pilot for care leavers, redirecting those funds to other support mechanisms.
