EU deals new blow to Russia as sanctions on aluminium and Shadow Fleet approved

The European Union has escalated its sanctions against Russia by targeting its aluminium industry and the so-called "shadow fleet" of tankers used to circumvent oil sanctions. This new package of measures, approved by EU ambassadors, includes import restrictions on Russian aluminium and its products, aiming to disrupt one of Russia's key revenue sources. Additionally, the EU has imposed sanctions on 193 individuals and entities, including those involved in the forced deportation of Ukrainian children, military officials, and companies supporting Russia's war efforts. The sanctions also extend to vessels in the shadow fleet, which help Russia evade the G7's oil price cap, and address the issue of "ghost tankers" that operate without proper insurance or identification. These actions are part of the EU's ongoing efforts to economically pressure Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine.
