  • The panel, headed by retired IAS officer Sudhir Kumar Shrivastava, will study and submit a report with its recommendations within three months, as per the government resolution (GR) dated January 22.

The Maharashtra government has established a high-level committee to explore the feasibility of phasing out petrol and diesel vehicles in Mumbai, aiming to reduce pollution and promote cleaner transportation alternatives. This initiative, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, includes key figures such as the Additional Chief Secretary of the Environment Department, Transport Commissioner, and representatives from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The committee's formation comes in response to the city's severe air quality issues, with Mumbai recently ranking as the second most polluted city globally. The panel will assess the practicality of transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) and other sustainable transport options, considering factors like infrastructure, economic impact, and public acceptance. This move aligns with broader national goals to decrease reliance on fossil fuels and combat climate change.
