  • The Biden administration doesn't plan to take action that forces TikTok to immediately go dark for U.S. users on Sunday, an administration official told ABC News.

The Biden administration has decided not to enforce a ban on TikTok that was implemented by the Trump administration in 2020. Instead, they are focusing on addressing national security concerns related to the app through negotiations with TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, which is based in China. The Trump-era order aimed to force ByteDance to divest its U.S. operations or face a ban due to fears that user data could be accessed by the Chinese government. The Biden administration's approach involves a detailed review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which has been examining TikTok's data security practices. This shift in policy reflects a broader strategy to mitigate risks associated with data privacy and national security without outright banning the popular social media platform, which has over 100 million users in the U.S.
