  • "Today's decision is not only a victory for the U.S. taxpayer, but also for American national security and the safety of citizens worldwide," House Oversight Chairman James Comer said in a statement.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has imposed a 10-year ban on EcoHealth Alliance and its former president, Peter Daszak, from receiving federal funds. This decision follows an investigation by HHS's Office of Inspector General, which found that EcoHealth Alliance failed to adequately monitor research on coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, did not report a gain-of-function experiment, and lacked proper oversight. The debarment was influenced by concerns over EcoHealth's compliance with federal regulations, its handling of research grants, and its relationship with the Wuhan lab, which has been at the center of theories about the origins of the COVID-19 virus. The action was taken under the authority of the HHS Secretary, with the support of the Department of Justice, highlighting significant lapses in EcoHealth's management and oversight of high-risk research.
