'A good direction': Departing US Ambassador talks trade, AUKUS, and climate

The departing US Ambassador to New Zealand, Tom Udall, expressed optimism about the future of US-New Zealand relations, highlighting several key areas of cooperation. In an interview with RNZ, Udall discussed the progress in trade relations, noting that while a full free trade agreement remains elusive, there have been advancements in specific sectors like agriculture, with the US recently allowing the import of New Zealand's fresh chilled lamb. He also touched on the AUKUS security pact, emphasizing its role in enhancing security in the Indo-Pacific region, though he acknowledged New Zealand's non-involvement due to its nuclear-free policy. Additionally, Udall praised New Zealand's leadership in climate change initiatives, particularly applauding the country's efforts in reducing emissions and its commitment to the Paris Agreement. He expressed hope that the US would continue to strengthen its partnership with New Zealand, focusing on shared values and mutual interests in trade, security, and environmental protection.
