Poland's Electoral Commission Reverses Decision on PiS Funding
- Poland's electoral commission reversed its decision to reject the nationalist Law and Justice party's 2023 financial report, ensuring it retains state funding for the 2025 presidential election. The change follows an appeal to the Supreme Court,
The Polish National Electoral Commission (PKW) has reversed its earlier decision to withhold funding from the Law and Justice (PiS) party, which had been accused of violating campaign finance rules during the October 2023 elections. Initially, the PKW had ruled that PiS could not receive state funding for its campaign due to these violations. However, following an appeal by PiS, the PKW reconsidered and decided to grant the party the full amount of public funding, approximately 27 million zlotys ($6.7 million), for the next four years. This decision was influenced by the need to ensure a level playing field for all political parties, despite the earlier findings of financial irregularities. The reversal has sparked controversy and debate over the transparency and fairness of political funding in Poland.
