  • AMID A FLURRY of recent school board policies aimed at the rights of transgender students, California passed a new law in July that prevents schools from requiring staff to notify parents if a student identifies as LGBTQ.

A new law in California, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, prohibits schools from mandating that teachers disclose a student's transgender or gender-nonconforming status to their parents without the student's consent. This legislation, known as Assembly Bill 1955, aims to protect the privacy of students by ensuring that school staff are not compelled to reveal a student's gender identity or sexual orientation. The bill was introduced by Assemblymember Chris Ward to address concerns about the safety and well-being of students who might face rejection or harm at home if their identity were disclosed. Critics argue that this law could create a divide between parents and schools, potentially undermining parental rights. However, supporters, including the ACLU of California, assert that it provides a necessary safeguard for vulnerable students, allowing them to come out on their own terms.
