Trump's Pick to Lead Federal Housing Agency Has Opposed Efforts to Aid the Poor
- As HUD secretary, Scott Turner would oversee billions in housing aid, but as a Texas state legislator he voted against protections for poor tenants and has called government assistance "one of the most destructive things for the family.
Scott Turner, a former NFL player and Texas state representative, was nominated by President Trump to serve as an assistant secretary at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Turner, who has no prior experience in housing policy, has a history of opposing public housing initiatives. During his time in the Texas legislature, he voted against measures aimed at improving housing conditions, such as opposing a bill that would have required landlords to provide air conditioning in rental units. His nomination raised concerns among housing advocates due to his lack of relevant experience and his past legislative actions which seemed to favor landlords over tenants. Critics worry that his appointment could lead to policies that further disadvantage low-income families in need of affordable housing. Turner's political career has been marked by conservative stances, including support for gun rights and opposition to abortion, aligning with broader Republican ideologies rather than specific housing policy expertise.
