  • Councils will be given new powers to use Compulsory Purchase Orders to buy disused sites as Labour pushes to meet its target of building 1.5m new homes
The UK government is set to introduce new legislation that will empower local councils to force owners of derelict shops and car parks to sell their land for the development of new housing. This initiative, part of a broader effort to address the housing crisis, aims to utilize brownfield sites in urban areas to build homes, thereby reducing the need to develop green belt land. The policy will allow councils to issue compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) more easily, with the government providing financial support to cover the costs of these acquisitions. This move is intended to accelerate housing construction, particularly in areas where land has been left unused or underused, promoting urban regeneration and increasing housing supply. The legislation is expected to be detailed in the King's Speech on July 17, 2023.
