GOP rep calls to strip power from DC and for Black Lives Matter Plaza to be 'paved over'

One House Republican who has long sought to curtail Washington, D.C.'s sovereignty is now pushing for President-elect Donald Trump to help him not only tighten Congress' screws on D.C.'s elected government,
GOP Representative James Comer has called for the revocation of Washington D.C.'s limited self-governing powers, arguing that the city should be treated like a federal district under direct congressional control. During a House Oversight Committee hearing, Comer criticized the city's management, particularly highlighting the Black Lives Matter Plaza as a symbol of what he perceives as misguided priorities. He suggested that the plaza, established in 2020 following widespread protests against racial injustice, should be paved over, claiming it represents a politicization of public spaces. Comer's comments reflect ongoing tensions between Republican lawmakers and D.C. officials, with many GOP members advocating for more federal oversight over the district's affairs.
