Abu Mohammed al-Golani, born in 1975 in the Golan Heights, is the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a jihadist group that has played a significant role in the Syrian conflict. Initially a member of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Golani returned to Syria in 2011 to establish Jabhat al-Nusra, which later became HTS after a split from al-Qaeda. His group has been instrumental in the fight against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, controlling parts of northwestern Syria, particularly Idlib.
