Voting began Sunday in Surinamese parliamentary elections that will determine who will harness giant oil wealth to carry out a rags-to-riches transformation of the smallest country in South America. On Sunday, Surinamese began electing a new parliament of 51 members, who within weeks must choose a new president and vice-president for a five-year term.

In Suriname, voters participated in an election to determine the government that will manage the country's burgeoning oil industry, with early results indicating a lead for the ruling coalition led by President Chan Santokhi. The election is crucial as it will decide who will oversee the development of significant offshore oil discoveries, which are expected to transform the nation's economy. The ruling coalition, which includes Santokhi's Progressive Reform Party and the General Liberation and Development Party, is competing against the opposition led by former President Desiré Delano Bouterse, who is currently appealing a 20-year sentence for murder. The oil sector's potential has attracted international attention, with companies like TotalEnergies and APA Corporation involved in exploration, and the outcome of the election could influence future oil contracts and economic policies.
