A coalition of unions, nonprofits and municipalities will urge a federal judge on Thursday to extend her temporary block on President Donald Trump's administration implementing mass layoffs at federal agencies,

In a significant legal challenge to former President Donald Trump's government overhaul, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., is set to hear arguments on whether the mass layoffs of federal employees, part of Trump's "Schedule F" executive order, were lawful. The order, issued in October 2020, aimed to reclassify tens of thousands of federal workers to at-will employees, stripping them of civil service protections. The lawsuit, brought by unions representing federal employees, argues that the layoffs, which occurred in the final days of Trump's presidency, violated federal law and were politically motivated. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for the future of federal employment and the balance of power between the executive branch and career civil servants.
