The Trump administration is threatening to freeze federal funding if colleges don't make changes, such as ending DEI initiatives.

In a joint letter, over 100 college and university leaders expressed concerns about political interference in higher education, particularly citing actions by the Trump administration that they believe undermine academic freedom and institutional autonomy. The letter, coordinated by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), specifically criticized the administration's efforts to influence curriculum, research, and campus policies, including attempts to alter the teaching of American history and restrict diversity and inclusion initiatives. The signatories, representing a diverse range of institutions, called for a reaffirmation of the principles of academic freedom and urged future administrations to respect the independence of higher education institutions.
