On 17 April, various Pacific news briefs were reported: In Papua New Guinea, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of East New Britain, causing no reported damage or injuries; the country also saw the launch of a new digital platform, PNGX, aimed at improving financial literacy and inclusion. In Fiji, the government announced plans to increase the minimum wage to FJ$4.50 per hour from August 1, 2023, to help workers cope with the rising cost of living. Meanwhile, in the Solomon Islands, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare expressed concerns over the slow progress of infrastructure projects funded by the Asian Development Bank, urging for faster implementation. Additionally, the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency reported a significant increase in illegal fishing activities in the region, calling for enhanced surveillance and enforcement measures.
