In a poll by the More in Common think tank last May, 58 per cent of people thought that Labour was proposing the policy "because they think more young people voting will benefit them in elections", compared to just 22 per cent who thought it was because Labour "think it will be good for the country".

The Labour Party in the UK is considering lowering the voting age to 16, a move that could potentially backfire according to political analysts. This policy, which has been part of Labour's agenda for some time, aims to engage younger voters who are currently disenfranchised. However, there are concerns that this change might not benefit Labour as expected. Recent polls suggest that 16 and 17-year-olds might not overwhelmingly support Labour, with some showing a preference for other parties or being undecided. Critics argue that this demographic might not vote in the numbers anticipated, and their political views could be more diverse than assumed, potentially splitting votes in unexpected ways. Additionally, the policy could face significant opposition from Conservative supporters and might be seen as an attempt to manipulate electoral outcomes, thus affecting Labour's broader appeal.
