BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - In a proactive response to the growing burden of energy costs on New Jersey families, lawmakers representing the 9th Legislative District - Assemblyman John F. Rooney, Assemblywoman Jeanette Vega, and Senator Robert Singer - are spearheading a new initiative: 'Utility Assistance Day.' Scheduled for March 23rd at the Berkeley Township Municipal Building, this event aims to streamline access to crucial financial assistance programs and provide direct support to residents struggling to afford essential utilities.

The announcement comes at a critical time. Over the past several years, New Jersey, like much of the nation, has experienced significant fluctuations and, generally, an upward trend in energy prices. Factors ranging from global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical instability to aging infrastructure and increased demand have all contributed to higher electricity, natural gas, and water bills. These increases disproportionately affect low-income households, seniors on fixed incomes, and families already facing financial hardship. The existing patchwork of assistance programs, while valuable, can be complex and difficult to navigate, leaving many eligible individuals unaware of or unable to access the help they need.

"Too many New Jersey families are facing crushing utility bills and struggling to make ends meet," Assemblyman Rooney stated. "We recognized a need to not only raise awareness of existing programs but to simplify the application process, offering hands-on assistance in a convenient, accessible location."

The Utility Assistance Day is designed as a one-stop resource center. Representatives from key state and local agencies, including the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), the Berkeley Township Municipal Utilities Authority, and potentially other local service providers, will be on hand to guide residents through the application processes for programs like the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and the Universal Service Fund (USF). LIHEAP provides financial assistance to help eligible households pay for heating and cooling costs, while the USF offers assistance with electricity and natural gas bills for low-income customers. Experts will also be available to discuss payment plans offered directly by utility companies, helping individuals manage their bills through manageable installments.

"We want to provide residents with the opportunity to get assistance and answers in one place, making it easier for them to access the programs that can help them save money," Rooney explained. "It's about removing barriers and ensuring that no one falls through the cracks when it comes to affording essential services."

Assemblywoman Vega emphasized the commitment to ensuring all New Jerseyans have access to the resources they need to stay warm and safe, particularly during the colder months. The initiative reflects a broader concern among lawmakers regarding energy affordability and the need for long-term solutions.

Senator Singer highlighted that the Utility Assistance Day is a "direct response to the concerns we've heard from our constituents about the rising cost of energy." This constituent feedback underscores the urgency of addressing energy affordability and the importance of proactive measures like this event. The 9th District lawmakers aren't simply offering a temporary fix; they're signaling a commitment to ongoing advocacy for policies that promote energy equity and protect vulnerable residents.

Beyond the immediate assistance offered on March 23rd, the success of this initiative could serve as a model for other districts across New Jersey. Expanding similar events statewide could significantly increase participation in crucial assistance programs and alleviate the financial strain on struggling families. The lawmakers are also exploring the possibility of establishing a permanent resource center or expanding the scope of existing community service offices to provide ongoing utility assistance.
