  • Over the weekend, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) accidentally fired several employees who were working on the federal government's response to the H5N1 bird flu outbreak. The USDA are now backpaddling in order to rehire these workers at a time when bird flu is ravaging the US poultry population and contributing to the rise in egg prices

The Trump administration inadvertently terminated and then attempted to rehire agents responsible for responding to bird flu outbreaks. This incident occurred due to a miscommunication within the Department of Agriculture, where an email intended to inform agents about a change in their employment status was mistakenly sent as a termination notice. This led to confusion and a temporary halt in bird flu surveillance and response efforts. The administration quickly moved to rectify the situation by rehiring the agents, but the episode highlighted significant administrative errors and raised concerns about the continuity and effectiveness of critical public health responses during a potential avian influenza outbreak.
