  • Tuscany has approved a bill regulating medically assisted suicide, becoming Italy's first region to enact a right-to-die law. The law requires a medical and ethics commission to consider an end-of-life request for no more than 30 days.

Tuscany has become the first region in Italy to approve a protocol allowing assisted suicide for individuals with incurable illnesses, following a landmark Constitutional Court ruling in 2019. This decision enables doctors to help patients who are kept alive by life-sustaining treatments and suffer from an irreversible pathology causing physical and psychological suffering, provided they are mentally competent to make such a decision. The protocol was developed in response to the court's ruling which decriminalized assisted suicide under specific conditions, although Italy's parliament has yet to pass a comprehensive law on the matter. This move by Tuscany sets a precedent in Italy, where euthanasia remains illegal, and assisted suicide was previously punishable by up to 12 years in prison.
