  • And the Mississippi legislature is joining in on taking action. However, that comes with its fair share of passionate debate. The House version of a DEI ban would impact the state's public schools from K-12 up to universities.

The Mississippi House and Senate have both passed bills aimed at restricting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in public colleges and universities. These bills, which are now headed to Governor Tate Reeves for approval, would ban the use of state funds for DEI offices, programs, or training that advocate for preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, or ethnicity. Additionally, the legislation prohibits mandatory DEI training or courses that promote concepts like "implicit bias" or "systemic racism." The bills also mandate that restrooms in these institutions be designated strictly for use by individuals based on their sex assigned at birth, with exceptions only for single-occupancy facilities. Critics argue that these measures could hinder efforts to address systemic inequalities and foster an inclusive environment, while supporters believe they prevent what they see as divisive and discriminatory practices.
