  • January 26 is an immensely proud and historic day for India. It marks the moment in 1950 when the country officially adopted its Constitution, transforming into a sovereign republic and building the foundation for its democratic future.

Prem Behari Narain Raizada was the calligrapher who handwrote the original Indian Constitution, a monumental task that took nearly three years to complete. Born in 1901 in a village in Uttar Pradesh, Raizada was trained in calligraphy by his father and later worked in the Public Works Department. His contribution to the Constitution involved writing the entire document in a beautiful, flowing script using a special type of ink that he prepared himself, ensuring the text would last for centuries. The Constitution, which comprises 395 articles, 22 parts, and 8 schedules, was written on parchment paper, and Raizada's work was so meticulous that he even signed his name at the end of the document, a rare honor. His legacy is celebrated as part of India's Republic Day, highlighting the intricate and painstaking efforts that went into creating one of the world's longest written constitutions.
