President Joe Biden, in one of his final acts before leaving office, issued a series of pardons on his last full day, including one for Marcus Garvey, a prominent Black nationalist leader from the early 20th century, and Don Scott, a former Virginia House of Delegates member. Garvey, who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, was convicted of mail fraud in 1923, a charge many believe was politically motivated. Don Scott, who served time for a drug-related offense, has since become a significant political figure, becoming the first African American Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates. These pardons reflect Biden's commitment to addressing historical injustices and recognizing the complexities of legal convictions in politically charged cases.
